What is Dental Implant
A dental implant is a sterile root form piece that is inserted in jaw bone that is used to replace missing teeth. It is typically made of biocompatible materials, such as titanium, which fuse with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration. Dental implants provide a stable and durable foundation for artificial teeth or dental crowns.
The implant itself is a small screw-like post that is surgically inserted into the jawbone beneath the gums. Once the implant is placed, it needs time to heal and integrate with the bone, usually over a period of several months. During this healing period, the jawbone grows around the implant, securing it in place.
After the healing process is complete, an abutment is attached to the implant. The abutment serves as a connector between the implant and the artificial tooth or dental crown. It protrudes through the gumline, allowing the dental prosthetic to be securely attached.
Once the abutment is in place, a dental crown or prosthetic tooth is custom-made to match the colour, shape, and size of the patient's natural teeth. This crown is then attached to the abutment, restoring the appearance, functionality, and bite alignment of the missing tooth.
